Discipline is one of the most prime movers of all things. Over time, either good ideas flourish with discipline, or errors in thinking grow into disasters without it. Almost anywhere in your life, the addition of discipline will either affect your life in a positive manner or the lack of discipline will affect you negatively.
- The good news is that discipline is a relatively simple thing to get going. You don’t have to begin doing everything you ever thought you should be doing all in one day. All it takes is a simple start.
- Pick one critical element of your business, such as making calls. Make it a goal to make a certain number of calls every day. Make those calls in the early part of the day, if possible.
- Say your goal is 50 calls. Engage in your new discipline for five days and you’ll have made 250 calls. In a month, that’s 1000 calls. In a 48 week work year, you’ll have made 12,000 new calls.
- How can 50 calls in one day turn into 12,000 calls? It’s a miracle, right? But, it is the sort of thing that happens when you engage in discipline.
There is another peculiarity with regard to discipline that is very excting. It is that one discipline has a way of tying itself to other disciplines. So, if you make those 50 calls each day, this means that other disciplines will emerge. For example,
- You’ll have to pay more regular attention to assembling your lists because you’ll need to have the numbers ready before each day of calling. [Sponsored Link - 100 Free Sales Leads! Find new customers & grow your sales with leads from infoUSA.com.

- You’ll also have to nail down any script you are using, because you’ll be working with it every day. [Sponsored Link - Learn how to make telephone prospecting calls - read Prospect Factory.]
- As you work, some of the prospects you call will inevitably ask you to follow-up with them in other ways such as mail, email, fax, etc. [Sponsored Link - Email Marketing and Online Surveys by Constant Contact make it easy to connect with your customers. Try it FREE for 60-Days.

- This will require you to create the necessary materials to fulfill such requests. [Sponsored Link - How to write letters for direct mail -The One Pager Manual.]
- Etc. Etc. Etc.
After a year of such activity, you will be transformed as a business person. Chances are you’ll end up adding other non-business related disciplines too. Maybe you’ll get up a little earlier and do some exercise. Perhaps you’ll add some reading or study time each day to improve your skills. Maybe you’ll start a better diet. Who knows?
Beginning to experience the power of discipline is easy. Simply add one new critical activity to your work day. Do that activity every day for a year. You’ll be amazed how much of a difference even one simple discipline can make!
